NURSING RATIONALE PSYCHOTROPIC DRUGS Psychotropic drugs are drugs that affect mood and behavior. They are generally used to temporarily modify disabling patterns of behavior so that the patient may cope with his environment more effectively to a therapeutic milieu. Generally speaking, psychotropic drugs can alleviate severe symptoms of emotional disorders and there by allow patient to function.  The consistent practice of taking.a tranquilizer when one is emotionally disturbed may lead to escapism and dependency which interferes with the much more more effective, working through, of the underlying problem.

CLASSIFICATION OF PSYCHOTROPIC DRUGS Psychotropic drugs fall into three categories:

1) the ataratics (tranquilizers, psycholeptics, depressants)
2) the antidepressants (psychostimulants, psychic energizers)
3) psychotomimetics (hallucinogenic, psychotogenic or psychedelic) Rationale The ataratics act by reducing agitation and anxiety. The antidepressants act as psychic stimulant, elevating mood, increasing physical activity and mental alertness, and decreasing premorbid preoccupations. The psychomimetics are capable of producing emotional and behavioral aberrations.
