THORAZINE
ACTION: Same as Librium; also
effective in treatment of mental and emotinal disturbances.
Route and Dosage: P.O. I. M.
suppository 25 - 100 mg
Side Effects: Drowsiness,
hypotension, jaundice Nursinq Implications Do not give if patient receiving
large doses of barbiturates. Wear gloves if giving I.M. to prevent contact
dermatitis.
NURSING RATIONALE PSYCHOTROPIC
DRUGS Psychotropic drugs are drugs that affect mood and behavior. They are
generally used to temporarily modify disabling patterns of behavior so that the
patient may cope with his environment more effectively to a therapeutic milieu.
Generally speaking, psychotropic drugs can alleviate severe symptoms of
emotional disorders and there by allow patient to function. The
consistent practice of taking.a tranquilizer when one is emotionally disturbed
may lead to escapism and dependency which interferes with the much more more
effective, working through, of the underlying problem.
CLASSIFICATION OF PSYCHOTROPIC
DRUGS Psychotropic drugs fall into three categories:
1) the ataratics (tranquilizers,
psycholeptics, depressants)
2) the antidepressants (psychostimulants, psychic energizers)
3) psychotomimetics (hallucinogenic, psychotogenic or psychedelic)
Rationale The ataratics act by reducing agitation and anxiety. The
antidepressants act as psychic stimulant, elevating mood, increasing physical
activity and mental alertness, and decreasing premorbid preoccupations. The
psychomimetics are capable of producing emotional and behavioral aberrations.
