CENTRAL NERVOUS STIMULANTS

CLASSIFICATION

Amphetamines, Benzedrine, Dexedrine

Caffeine

ACTION

Exact mechanism amphetamines act is unknown.

Central nervous system stimulation(anorexiant, control appetite) stimulating reticular activating system.

Route and Dosaqe: Amph. . PO, IV - benze. . PO, IM 5 to 10 mg -
Dexe. . PO, 2 to 5mg

SIDE EFFECTS: Euphoria, restless perspire freely dilated pupils.
Can produce convulsions, coma and death in large doses.

NURSING IMPLICATIONS: watch for mental depression following withdrawal. So not leave medication at bed side

CAFFEINE

ACTION :Respiratory and Cerebral stimulant.

(cerebral Cortex) alertness, talkativeness, restlessness

Route and Dosage

PO, IM 500 mg

Side Effects: Insonnia, nausea,tremor, nervousness

Nursinq Implications

If  giving PO, watch for gastric irritation, and gastric ulcer, as caffeine stimulates gastric secretion of HCL.
