ENTERAL FEEDINGS

 “Enteral feedings” literally refer to “feedings through the small intensive. “Enteral feeding which may be intragastric or transpyloric, provide nutrition to individuals whose nutrition is altered and is not meeting their nutritional requirements. Enteral feedings are also usually administered to residents who can digest some nutrients but cannot consume them by mouth.

Indications                                                       

Enteral feeding are, used in individuals whose nutrition is compromises and who cannot consume enough nutrients and calories through oral consumption. Eternal feedings are usually indicated by the following conditions:

Anorexia

Malabsorption due to:

-         Pancreatic insufficiency

-         Short bowel syndrome

-         Major stress

 Nutritional support may be provided to older individuals through nutrient-rich supplements or tube feedings.

 CONTRAINDICATIONS     

Although enteral tube feedings have many advantages, they should also be avoided in residents with the following conditions:

.    Ileus     

.    Severe GI hypomotility     

.    Acute pancreatitis   

.    Severe diarrhea 

.   High-output eternal fistulas

.   Severe vomiting      

.   Mucositis

.    Resection of 90% or the small bowel

Enteral feedings may be contraindicated in residents with these conditions, which may be aggravated or the enteral feedings may not deliver adequate nutrition.
